Hong Kong Railways History

The first mode of rail transport in  Hong Kong  was the  Peak Tram , serving  The Peak , the  Mid-levels  and the city centre since 1888.  Tram  started service along the northern coast of the  Hong Kong Island  in 1904. The  British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway  (later the KCR East Rail), a conventional railway, was opened in 1910. It was not until 1979 that a rapid transit system, the  MTR , was opened. Three years later, the British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway began its transition towards electrification, changing it into a commuter rail, and eventually providing rapid transit-like service. The  Light Rail Transit  (LRT, now the MTR Light Rail) began its operation in the  Tuen Mun  and  Yuen Long  new towns in 1988. China Railways History

The oldest railway in China is the nine-mile long Wusong Railway in East China built by the British in 1876. It connects the city of Shanghai and the port town of Wusong. According to official records, it’s the oldest railway in China. In 1881, China built the six mile Tangxu railway to transport coal from the northern coal mining city of Tangshan. It is believed to have been the first railway designed and built by the Chinese people. Fast forward to April 2007, when China’s first high-speed rail service was officially launched. Since then the number of daily passenger trips has grown ten times to 2.5 million in 2014, making China's high-speed rail network the most heavily used in the world. Singapore Railways History

The first railway in Singapore was built by the Tanjong Pagar dock company in 1877 and ran along their wharves. It was operated by two locomotives supplied by  Dick & Stevenson . Next came the  Singapore Steam Tramway  in 1885. This closed by 1894 and the stock was disposed of to the  Tanjong Pagar Dock Company  and  Penang Steam Tramway . The  Singapore Railway  Line was built from Singapore station, opposite Read Road at the southern foot of  Fort Canning  and ran to Woodlands Station which was located on the coast opposite Johore. It was mooted as early as the 1860s, approved by the Legislative Council in 1899 and completed in 1903 at a cost of $2 million. Management of the Singapore Railway operations, buildings and land were transferred to the  Federated Malay States Railway  (FMSR) in 1918 for over $4 million. Thai Railways History

1. The Beginning  Most of the Thai Railways current Railway Network was designed and constructed in the 1890's. The first railway in Thailand was the Paknam Railway, which followed the course of Bangkok's present Rama IV road. This line opened in 1893, but is no longer in existence. In 1897 the Railways System in Thailand was officially inaugurated into the Royal government. On January 1,1960 the Old Paknam Railway was closed and dismantled, and many of its stations were demolished. 2. The Lines --a. Northeastern Lines  - On March 9, 1891, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) issued a Royal Proclamation ordering the construction on the first State Railway Line in Siam. The line was to be from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima in the Northeast of the Siam kingdom. Indial Railways History

The first railway proposals for India were made in  Madras  in 1832.The country's first train,  Red Hill Railway  (built by  Arthur Cotton  to transport granite for road-building), ran from  Red Hills  to the  Chintadripet  bridge in Madras in 1837.In 1845, the  Godavari Dam Construction Railway  was built by Cotton at  Dowleswaram  in  Rajahmundry , to supply stone for the construction of a dam over the  Godavari River . In 1851, the  Solani Aqueduct Railway  was built by  Proby Cautley  in  Roorkee  to transport construction materials for an  aqueduct  over the Solani River. Myanma Railways

The first railway line in Myanmar, between Yangon and Pyay, 161 miles apart, was opened on the 1st of May 1877,by the Ir-rawaddy State Railway. But in 1896, Irrawaddy StateRailway gave way to Burma Railways Co. Ltd. operating on a commercial basis and when the company's lease was ended on the 31st  of December 1928, Burma Railways was placed under the Indian Railway Board. Myanmar and India were separated in 1937 and theGovernment of Myanmar formed the Burma Railway Board to look after the af-fairs of the Myanmar Railways. In 1942 the British  Governor took over the powers and functions of the Burma Railway  Board and re-delegated these power to a body of persons with theChief Railway Commissioner as ex-officio president. This Railway Board continued to function until the 31st of December 1947.
